Whilst summer is on its way it’s a beautiful time for residents to get involved in gardening and get stuck in the mud. As there are lots of plants to choose from one of our residents thought of a great idea of starting a sunflower competition to see whose grows the tallest. As sunflowers need a sunny, sheltered spot the best place to put these in our onsite green house.
Gardening is a great way to lower stress levels and can be good for our mental well-being and is very satisfying.
One of our residents has a very strong passion when it comes to gardening and absolutely loves the new poly tunnel that’s been put up ready to be filled with various amounts of vegetables and plants. This gives us an opportunity to broaden our planting as polytunnels provide higher temperatures and humidity allowing you to grow various fruit and vegetables plants even when there out of season such as tomatoes, cabbages, lettuces, peppers, and carrots. It’s lovely to see our residents eating their own fruit and vegetables that they’ve grown themselves and making healthy choices.
Residents go out shopping buying their own gardening equipment, choosing what seeds they want to plant and buy the right tools for the job. As you can see from the photos the excellent progress that’s been made on the vegetable patch and the variety of different plants, that we have in the polytunnel. These are kept freshly watered every day, this encourages residents to take care and pride in their growing to eat experience.
